Age Level: 9 and up – Grade Level: 4 and up
This is an entertaining collection of silly poems, limericks and sonnets for children and families to enjoy – plus a few not so silly verses. Children under the age of nine will enjoy listening to most of these poems as well. I show you how to read a poem – which syllables to stress to make the rhythm and rhyme flow.
Here are sample lines from some of the poems:
In a land far away known as Spoonsipper
Was a small village by river Stoneskipper
There in twelve minutes or possibly quicker
Stood tumbledown shack of Mr. McSnipper
There once was a very big cat
Whose body was overly fat
Too much did she weigh
Ate candy all day
But never would dine on a rat
Penny the pudgy pink pig
Struts ‘round the farm in her wig
Bows in long tresses
Dressy in dresses
Sways when she zags with a zig
There’s a troll on my couch
he sits in a slouch
yet never does wiggle his tail
Bug eyes glaring at me
wonder what he sees
I try to out stare him but fail
Little Stanley was a blue ant
On a hill where all were brown
All the ‘antlings’ said that he can’t
Come and join them on playground
His big compound eyes wept wet tears
Lonely walked alone all day
Stanley sadly heard their gay cheers
And then Stanley ran away
All these and more are waiting for you to visit. So come on in and meet some new friends!
And when you are finished reading, I will show you how to write your own poems.

How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
It takes planning and the ability to express yourself in very few words. A poet has to voice it in one or two stanzas whereas a fiction writer can spend several paragraphs saying the same thing. It takes time to get to the core of what you want to say, and yet have the reader comprehend it.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
Write write write. And read read read. Always begin by writing about what you know – your own life and family. Then you can branch out to whole new venues.
Author Bio:
I was born in 1946 – the first year of the Baby Boomers. I lived in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts most of my life – Pittsfield, Richmond and Lenox.
I graduated from the University of Mass in Amherst in 1968 with a BS in Mathematics. I did a two-year stint in the Peace Corps in the Philippines from 1968-1970 teaching high school modern mathematics. I later taught for eleven years and then became a computer programmer/analyst and eventually an MIS Director.
I currently winter in Florida and summer in upstate NY – with my 35 year old African Gray Parrot, Little Pete.
I enjoy playing piano and guitar as well as painting watercolors.
I started writing poetry when I was in my early teens. It has always brought me joy to be able to express my emotions in writing. My poems tend to be quite straightforward. You won’t need a dictionary or an encyclopedia to comprehend them. I like my poems to flow easily and have the reader “experience” what I felt at the time I wrote them. You won’t have to struggle to try to figure out what I am saying.
My allegorical book of poetry “Shaker Lane – Poems Beneath My Feet” was featured on FreeBooksy on January 11, 2013. I feel honored as they hand select the books they choose to feature.
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I write poetry and always wanted to try silly verses, limericks and somewhat more serious poems for young children. I briefly explain meter and rhyme. At the end, I take the reader through my creative process in composing a poem.
